Date of construction: 1880s
Directly across Oriental Alley (closed off and no longer open) from the hotel at was Hickman Tye Hardware Co Ltd. at 546 Yates Street. Established as the firm of Matthews, Richards and Tye in the 1880s, the company took the name of Thomas Hickman Tye around the turn of the twentieth century. It was still in this location when the streetcar made its journey. The building featured a tower on the southwest corner that served as an aid to navigation. In later years the business was located on View Street near Quadra, not closing until the 1970s. There is now a modern building on the Yates Street site. It was a BC government liquor store outlet for many years.
